Sad to say, a lot of dogs that end up in animal shelters are underweight and malnourished. I find it painful to witness animals battling until they are almost unable to stand. Some animals still display affection and trust for people despite being mistreated, while others cower in fear when a rescuer approaches. On occasion, it’s challenging to comprehend what the latter have gone through. Personally, I find it impossible to imagine ever wanting to harm an animal. I just don’t know why anyone would find any enjoyment in doing it, either.
Despite this, I think dogs have a sixth sense about who is good and who is bad. The importance of letting a creature who has experienced neglect make the first move will be understood by those who work with animals. Although it’s normal to want to pet and play with a dog to show it that you mean no harm, this isn’t always the best course of action.
Some people don’t understand how a dog who has witnessed abuse could be startled by a complete stranger. Just a few hours separated Edie, an abandoned mixed-breed dog, from being put to death. She was terrified of people because it had been a very, very long time since anyone had taken care of her. Her fur was untidy, and she was gravely malnourished.
It took a true animal lover to give Edie another chance. The beginning of the video is difficult to watch. Due to her intense fear, Edie is so lost that she doesn’t even know what to do with herself. She shakes her entire body and yells at the man she perceives as a threat. In the end, though, the man in the video manages to apprehend Edie and keep her from running away. He can now approach her without restriction. A trust pact then develops quickly. Edie begins to understand that he wants to help her rather than hurt her. You almost have the impression that you can see her face when she realizes she won’t be humiliated any longer.
