If you’re anything like me, you spend a lot of time planning meals and preparing food, making all of those helpful kitchen tips and tricks that save you time (and your sanity) worthwhile to know. I’ve gathered some of the best kitchen tips that may have you wondering “Why didn’t I think of that?”. I wish I had known these things years ago.
Unknown cooking hints and techniques.
Some of these “secrets” (like removing cracked eggshells from eggs and storing leftover sauces) I’m sure I’ll use frequently. No matter if you’re a workaholic who hardly has time to open the fridge, a busy stay-at-home mom, or a hopeful host of your own Food Network show, I think you’ll find a few life hacks here!

GRATE COLD BUTTERI haven’t used this quick hack yet, but I really like the concept. For it to work, your stick of butter must be almost frozen, and you must act quickly to prevent it from melting. However, the grated butter is perfect for mixing with flour before baking biscuits, scones, muffins, and other baked goods. If your butter is too cold to spread, consider grating it first before spreading it on toast, vegetables, or a baked potato.
GETTING A BROKEN SHELL BACK.
No one told you these kitchen hacks.
The brown organic eggs always break off into little pieces so much more easily when I make eggs for breakfast, which is almost always the case. Instead of rummaging through your bowl with your finger (yeah, I do that too), use one of the egg shell halves to scoop it out.
Check the freshness of the eggs.

Even though knowing this is helpful, I consume too many eggs for them to ever go bad. I went to my refrigerator to try it out when I first saw this because I was so excited. You probably want to know how it does, and there is science behind it. My eggs appeared to be 4–6 days old, which is acceptable. Eggshells are porous, so over time, air can slowly seep inside. It explains why the egg will eventually float because the egg gradually gets lighter as more air is infused into it.
HOW TO FREEZE ICE POPS SMARTLY.
Unknown cooking hints and techniques.
I’m not sure about you, but I’ve always referred to these as Otter Pops. I can recall having a freezer full of them as a child during the summer. My favorite ice cream flavors were the jumbo ones that were available from the ice cream truck that toured my neighborhood. We frequently had melted popsicle syrup on our scissors. It’s a shame I didn’t think of this then!
HOW TO PEEL AN ORANGEThis instruction is especially useful for those of you without nails to pierce the thick orange skin. If you use a few skilful knife strokes, you can easily peel an orange and eat it without the juice getting all over your hands. The best part is that it’s FUN, and you can find all the details here.

DO NOT USE UP LEFTOVER SAUCE.
No one told you these kitchen hacks.
I detest wasting food, but it can occasionally be challenging to do so, especially when a recipe calls for half a cup but the cans are packaged in 16 ounce portions (like tomato paste). You could essentially do this with any leftover canned goods and homemade sauces. Simply place leftovers in an ice cube tray, freeze them, and then transfer the cubes to a freezer-safe bag.
