After his car broke down, 76-year-old Lemuel Buster took it upon himself to rent a car so he wouldn’t miss a game. Buster works for the parks and recreation division in Paulding County, Georgia, as a referee.
The volleyball experience Buster has has influenced his devotion to and commitment to his children. He played the sport while in the Navy and is excited to do so once more.
That is why Buster decided to rent a car after his broke down and he was unable to fix it. Students and parents who saw him rent cars to go to their games were aware of this.
In order for Buster to purchase a new car, the volleyball players and their families began to covertly amass money. The referee was not informed of this. This town came together around this noble endeavor because of Lemuel Buster’s unwavering dedication to his students.
The community’s efforts weren’t in vain. The owner of a used car lot and the player’s father also made the choice to stand by the reputable referee.
They gathered in the gym of the school to give Buster the money they had raised. He received $1,000 in cash, a $25 Walmart gift card, free meals at McDonald’s, and—most significantly—a Chrysler Sebring convertible from the community in exchange for his efforts.
Lemuel Buster burst into tears of joy as soon as he stepped outside the school gym and saw his car. After saying “thank you” to everyone, the referee was able to drive himself home.
