In a world where true love often feels elusive, there are remarkable stories that restore our faith. The incredible bond between Kathleen and Raymond Atkins is one such tale. Married for an inspiring 70 years, their love was unbreakable, even in the face of immense loss.
Raymond, aged 90, bravely battled lung cancer for two years while Kathleen, at 86, stayed by his side. They longed to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary together in their beloved home in Crewe, Virginia. But fate had a different plan. Kathleen couldn’t bear to wait any longer. Driven by her deep longing for her husband, she made the ultimate sacrifice and joined Raymond on the other side.
Their love story began seven decades ago, as they exchanged vows on Kathleen’s farmhouse. Together, they weathered life’s storms, raising four children and facing challenges, including their own battles with cancer. Their son, Les Atkins, fondly recalls that their humble home in Crewe was where “life happened for them.”
Raymond’s strong work ethic and unwavering determination were evident even when he learned of his cancer diagnosis. Despite his illness, he continued working, unwilling to let it dampen his spirit. In mid-July, Raymond returned from the hospital to spend his final days at home, marking their extraordinary milestone together. Les recounts Raymond’s heartfelt words, “I prayed to God all night and all day that I can leave this hospital, and I will be out of here in the morning.” His prayer was answered, bringing Raymond back to the place where their love had flourished for 70 remarkable years.
However, as days turned into nights, Raymond’s health rapidly declined, leaving Kathleen shattered at the thought of a life without him. Les tearfully remembers, “She could not imagine life without him.” Their daughter and Les’s sister decided to stay with their parents during the final days, providing solace and companionship.
Tragically, on August 4, 2020, Les’s sister discovered that Raymond had peacefully passed away in his sleep when she checked on him in the early morning. Overwhelmed with grief, Kathleen refused to let her husband go on his final journey alone. In a heart-wrenching act of love and devotion, she climbed into bed beside him and whispered her final words, “I’m not gonna let him go alone.”
Just minutes later, Kathleen too peacefully passed away, her love for Raymond transcending even death. Les reflects on their incredible connection: “They did not want to go alone. They had endured this life together. They had this strong faith, and they just refused to be apart. It’s a fairy tale in every sense of the word.”
Les took to Facebook to share their extraordinary love story, describing the conflicting emotions of both horror and beauty that enveloped him. Their powerful bond has left an indelible mark on their four children, six grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren, who will forever cherish their legacy of love. As they were laid to rest side by side, their hearts forever intertwined, their remarkable journey serves as a testament to the enduring power of love.
