The top actors in the industry convey the illusion that everything is easy and straightforward. Sometimes, in fact, their on-screen performances seem so natural that we, the audience, can lose sight of the extent of the effort they are making. How frequently do you stop to think about the work that goes into any given actor’s portrayal, aside from the courage it takes to go in front of the camera and put yourself out there in the first place?
No, I think most of us are unaware of the occasionally stressful nature of the acting business. Few other professions can provide the same level of fame and fortune, but such success comes at a price, and I’m sure there are many actors out there who are dealing with – or have dealt with – tougher situations than they would ever admit. Whatever the case, the consistently beautiful Michelle Pfeiffer doesn’t seem ashamed to discuss her past insecurities.
In a recent episode of The Skinny Confidential podcast, the renowned actress admitted that she “cried herself to sleep” while filming Scarface because she was terrified of working with Al Pacino.
The 65-year-old is an expert when it comes to large-scale productions and Hollywood glitz. However, the actress was once a newcomer to the scene who yearned to make a name for herself in the industry.
She was only 25 years old, fresh-faced, and had few acting credits to her name.
Since she had the chance to play Al Pacino, Pfeiffer had been vying for the role of Scarface’s love interest. But once she had the part, the actress realized she was utterly terrified of her co-star.
Pfeiffer acknowledged on the podcast The Skinny Confidential, “I cried myself to sleep almost every night while watching Scarface.”. It was obviously very significant to me”.
At the time, Pfeiffer’s only other notable acting role was in Grease 2. Then, a month later, they [the casting agents] called me back for a screen test, she recalled”.
Pfeiffer asked, “Would you be scared to work with Al Pacino? ” before admitting that her biggest fear about working with the now-83-year-old, who was already a major star at that point, was that she would be bad. You may disagree with me, but I thought Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface was excellent. We can probably conclude that she had nothing to worry about.
