Following a submission to the New York City district attorney’s office, Donald Trump was detained on April 4. With this shocking arrest, Trump becomes the first US president to be charged with serious crimes.
This is the result of the grand jury’s decision to indict him on March 30. The charges were initially kept under wraps, though. According to Truth Social, in response to the grand jury decision, Trump reportedly said, “This is an attack on our country as we’ve never seen before.”. The 45th President of the United States foresaw his demise in an earlier post on his contentious social media platform on March 18—though his timing was a little off.
Trump’s accusations center on a 2016 hush payment of $130,000 to Stormy Daniels. Daniels claimed in sworn testimony that the cash was given to her in exchange for signing a nondisclosure agreement (NDA) that prevented her from disclosing her alleged relationship with Trump in 2006, before the election. Despite Michael Cohen, his attorney, testifying against him during his grand jury hearing on March 15, he has vehemently denied the affair and claims that he ordered the payment. Of course, before entering the courtroom, Trump commented on his arrest.
On April 4, prior to his arraignment hearing, Donald Trump showed up at the district attorney’s office. Trump wrote on Truth Social that the encounter was “surreal” before going into the courtroom, adding, “WOW, they are going to ARREST ME. “I can’t believe this is happening in the United States!”.
It’s unclear whether Trump will be treated differently given the peculiar circumstances surrounding his arrest. But he’ll have to go through the same routine screening as everyone else, which includes getting his fingerprints taken.
He wasn’t leaving quietly, as is typical of a Trump. Trump issued a stirring call to action to his ardent supporters on March 18 after announcing his impending detention. He wrote on Truth Social, “Protest, take back our country!”. Prior to Trump’s arraignment, Marjorie Taylor Greene and George Santos, two other controversial Republicans, appeared to have joined his throngs of supporters in New York City’s streets. These accusations are merely the tip of the iceberg in terms of the former president’s laundry list of issues, as he is the subject of numerous active criminal investigations, including one for inciting violence during the January 6 Capitol riots.
