Keanu Reeves is not one to flaunt his relationship for all to see. It would imply that there were too many people who had an opinion. Reeves revealed in 2021 that he was still married to Winona Ryder. It had been 29 years since they had married. Keanu explains his reasoning.
“I guess we’re married now.”
This wedding was not set traditionally, with the white gown, bouquet, and all the friends and family to quench your social thirst for some time afterward.
They had a ceremony and everything, but instead of being in a church with everyone they knew, they were on set with an entire film crew. Of course, this did not occur in “real life,” but rather during the filming of “Dracula” in 1992.
“We did an entire take of a wedding ceremony with real priests,” Reeves explained. When asked if they were still married, Reeves replied, “Winona says we are. According to Coppola, we are. So I guess we’re married in God’s eyes.”
Francis Ford Coppola directed the “Dracula” film. He wanted the scene to be as realistic as possible, so he used a real church as the setting.
Authenticity, according to the director, was essential. “Having a real wedding ceremony in that religion [Greek Orthodox Christianity] would be beautiful,” he said.
Even he has admitted that the scene in which the characters marry may be more genuine than they first thought. “This is pretty authentic and, in my opinion, very beautiful, because we performed the ceremony and had the priest perform it,” Coppola said.
“In a way, when we were all done, we realized that Keanu and Winona are truly married due to this scene and this ceremony.”
“I believe we are married in real life.”
When the two were doing media coverage for the 2018 film “Destination Wedding,” Entertainment Weekly asked them about their relationship. Ryder believes God believes they are married because of the vows they took.
Even if it was for a movie scene. “I think we’re married,” she explained. “No, I swear to God, I think we’re married. Francis used a real Romanian priest in that scene. We shot the master, and he did everything. So, I believe we’re married.”
It has come to light that they both had a crush on each other for a time. However, neither acted on those feelings nor realized that they were mutual.
Keanu and Winona have been friends for a long time.
“Dracula” was not their first or last film together. They starred in “Destination Wedding,” as previously stated, but they have also co-starred in films such as “A Scanner Darkly” and “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee.”
Regardless, they have both a professional and a personal relationship. They never dated each other, but they are both in romantic relationships.
Sandra Bullock is another close friend of Reeve’s. She expressed her thoughts in the December issue of Esquire magazine. She believes they would have made a good couple and survived where others did not. They did not, however, give each other a chance.
“Keanu’s a guy who seems to be friends with every woman he’s ever dated,” Bullock said.
“I don’t believe anyone has anything negative to say about him. So maybe we could have made it. I’m not sure. But we didn’t have to do anything to survive.”
“We just get to grow up on parallel roads and tip our hats and meet for dinner and try to work together,” she added. And the more time passes, the more I admire the human being.”
Finally, she justifies her actions: “Would I have been able to say that if he had dumped me and made me angry? Most likely not.”
