We were just meant to be, Sidney Poitier and Joanna Shimkus said of their 45-year interracial union.

Over the course of his six-decade career, Sidney Poitier—the first Black man to win an Oscar—paved the way for a wide range of other Black artists.

After he passed away on January 6, 1994, tributes to the legend flooded in. Former president Barack Obama called Sidney a “unique talent who exemplified dignity and grace”.

He was kind and provided for all of us by opening doors that had been closed for a long time, a friend later added. Denzel Washington, Sidney’s co-star, described it as an honor.

Sidney Poitier played his first significant role in the 1955 movie Blackboard Jungle. After that, he made another 55 film and television appearances. He’ll be remembered for assisting Hollywood in removing racial barriers.

The Bahamian-American actor wed Canadian actress Joanna Shimkus in 1976, and as the saying goes, “no man succeeds without a good lady by his side”.

When he first met Shimkus, he had four children, a previous marriage, and an extramarital relationship.

Poitier, the youngest of seven kids, was raised on Cat Island in the Bahamas, where his father ran a farm. He spent the first ten years of his life there. Poitier unexpectedly arrived three months early and acquired US citizenship in the process. The family would fly to Miami to sell their items.

Before moving to America at the age of 15 and enlisting in the military as a young man while lying about his age, he first established himself in Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas.

After leaving the army, he worked as a dishwasher before being chosen for a role with the American Negro Theatre in Harlem, New York. The aspiring actor moved on to another audition after his first. At age 18, he was informed that his accent prevented him from becoming an actor and that he “could hardly read.”. ”.

He bought a radio to imitate the accents he heard, read every newspaper and magazine he could get his hands on, and asked the elderly Jewish waiter at the restaurant where he worked as a dishwasher to teach him to read and expand his vocabulary despite the harsh rejection.

After a further year and a half, he returned to the production company for another audition and, after doing so, was hired for the show, beginning a career that would bring him many honors.

He first appeared on our screens more than ten years ago, and it took another ten years for him to receive his first Academy Award, which he received for the film “Lilies of the Field.”.

His role in “The Lost Man,” where he first met Joanna Shimkus, was possibly his most significant performance.

The film was released in 1969, four years after Poitier and Juanita Hardy’s divorce.

Additionally, his nine-year relationship with actress Diahann Carroll had ended the previous year.

The first union between Sidney and Juanita Hardy lasted 15 years. They were wed in 1950, and their divorce was finalized in 1965. But he still kept his union with Joanna Shimkus, with whom he had two daughters.

In 1998, Joanna remarked, “I suppose we were meant to be [together]. ”.

To raise their daughters Anika and Sidney, who have followed in their parents’ footsteps, Shimkus took a break from acting between 1972 and 2010 and focused on raising them.

“Black Irish” was produced by Shimkus, with Anika directing the film. Veronica Mars and “Death Proof,” both directed by Quentin Tarantino, both feature Sidney”.

Poitier claimed in an interview that over the years, his wife had taught him the importance of publicly expressing his love for him. ”.

Shimkus added another reason for their long-lasting union: “We’ve been together for 49 years, and I’m a good cook.” Sidney previously said to People in 2016 that “my wife and my children mean the most to me.”. Every night I make dinner. I take excellent care of him”.

He received an honorary Academy Award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and a knighthood from the Queen in recognition of his contributions to the entertainment industry. Despite all of his achievements, he never forgot how important family is.

The famous actor enjoyed spending time with his wife, ex-wife, six daughters, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Such relationships have a long history in the relationships between people of different races.

However, Joanna claimed that she and her husband had no issues with it.

“I was raised in Canada, not America, and never really encountered prejudice. These were things I just didn’t feel.

No issues have ever arisen for us.

There is a chance that we will live very quietly. It may just be how things are by default, but I’m not sure. He was a man, but I never thought of him as being Black. I knew he was a black man, but I thought he was a great man. She called herself “a wonderful person” in Sidney Poitier: One Bright Light. ”.
