Not all heroes have capes, as illustrated by the tale of a valiant uncle named Derrick Byrd.
His family has hailed him as a hero for risking his life to save the lives of his niece and nephew, which is not at all surprising.
When the fire started in the family’s Aberdeen, Washington, home, Kayla, Derrick’s sister, and her three kids were among the victims.
Derrick took his nephews in his arms and jumped out the window from the second floor after realizing how quickly the house could burn down.
His niece Mercedes, age 8, watched her mother drop from the roof but didn’t follow.
Without hesitation, Derrick went back inside the house to free his kidnapped niece.
Once inside, he could feel the flames on his face, but saving Mercedes was more important.
He cited his sensation of being scorched as his justification.
“I grabbed her and just carried her out as fast as I could, ripping off my shirt to cover her face so she wouldn’t breathe in any smoke. “.
Derrick suffered second- and third-degree burns to his face, back, and arms as a result of his selfless act. He says he would undergo rehabilitation again if necessary, even though it took time and caused him great pain.
“I didn’t mind that I got burned. I’d rather set myself on fire than her. She is relatively inexperienced. She still has a lot going for her. He told KOMO-TV, “She’s a nice kid.
“I’d rush back in there and do it again, even if I got severely burned or killed. “.
Derrick replied, “I can’t say a hero, when people call me a hero. I’d just like to say that I wouldn’t allow my nieces and nephews to pass away. “.
