Most middle school students likely have other concerns besides building houses. Luke Thill, a 13-year-old from Dubuque, Iowa, is exceptional, unlike any other middle schooler you have ever seen. The creative and resourceful young man now lives in his own tiny house in his parents’ backyard. Luke is now living his dream in his little cottage after spending about $1,500 USD on the project. Luke Thill I’m confident in claiming that Luke stands out among his 13-year-old peers. In a world of iPads, smart phones, gadgets, and X Boxes, this young man decided to keep himself occupied in a different and more “traditional” way. According to what he says on his YouTube channel, his inspiration for building a small house came from a summer of boredom. After conducting extensive research, Luke was reasonably confident in the way he was going to carry out his plan.
The Process It took him about a year to gather the materials and money needed to build the house. Luke cut lawns to make money and ran errands for neighbors who needed help. He also launched an online fundraising effort. For instance, an electrician Luke knew assisted him in installing the electricity in exchange for Luke cleaning out his garage.
The majority of the recycled materials Luke used—roughly 75%—were still lying around his grandmother’s house. The front door of the house was a gift from an uncle’s acquaintance.
The 89 square foot house measures 10 feet long by 5 1/2 feet wide. There isn’t any water or a bathroom…
yet, even though it has electricity, because it lacks plumbing.

As you might anticipate, Luke also received financial and building support from his parents. Greg, however, made sure that Luke would finance and build the majority of his project on his own, as well as pay for the remaining costs. The experience gave kids “a chance to do something other than play video games or play sports,” Greg told The Des Moines Register.

In many ways, the home is a teenager’s paradise—a place where they can relax and hang out. A microwave, a TV, and a bed are in the loft. In the backyard, there are even a barbecue and flowers. After school, Luke usually completes his homework at his new house, where he also spends some evenings during the week.
Luke has already started planning to build a slightly bigger house for when he starts college. He also wants to inspire other people to go after their dreams.
