Born in Buffalo, Minnesota, Shala Holm grew up there. Shala found a large snapping turtle months ago, but it wasn’t until after that that her photo went viral.

Shala spent the summer of 2013 with her family at the nearby Niemeyer’s Rugged River Resort. When they first spotted the animal, Holm and her daughter were in a tandem kayak.

When Holm turned to look for something more recognizable on the beach, she was startled to see the turtle’s nose pointing in the direction of a fish basket that hung from their kayak.

The mother and daughter paddled back there the following day to see if they could locate it once more so they could take a photo. While they waited for the turtle, they passed the time by fishing.
Being so close to the water is what Holm considers to be the joy of being in a kayak. So we were pretty close together.
The mother and daughter were uncertain of the size of the reptile in the water, but were pleasantly surprised to learn that it was a snapping turtle, and that its legs were about the size of Holm’s wrists.
Adult snapping turtles typically range in size from 8 to 14 inches and weigh between 10 and 35 pounds, according to the state Department of Natural Resources. The largest turtle ever discovered was an impressive 65 pounds and was discovered in Minnesota.
Shala emailed the picture to the DNR so they could request more details. The turtle was estimated to be between 15 and 30 years old.
